INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
COILS FOR 12-VOLT SYSTEMS
RESISTOR NOT REQUIRED
1. DO NOT INSTALL these coils on 12-volt systems equipped with a resistor or with resistance built into the wiring harness.
2. SELECT THE RIGHT COIL by referring to the application guide in the catalog.
3. COIL POLARITY MUST BE CORRECT. If the negative battery post is grounded, the coil terminal
marked (-) must be connected to the distributor. If the positive post is grounded, connect the coil marked (+) to the distributor.
4. All connections must be clean and tight. Make sure the coil high tension wire is firmly seated in the coil tower and the spark plug wires are firmly seated in the distributor cap towers

Ignition Coil 12 Volt

With Internal Resistor

Ignition coil for 12 volt electrical system. Suitable for Dodge WC series vehicles converted from the original 6 volt to 12 volt. Fitted with internal ballast resistor for extended life of the points.

Voltage

12 volt

Type

With internal ballast resistor

Application

12V conversion electrical system

Connection

Standard primary + secondary

Features

  • 12 volt ignition coil with internal resistor
  • Suitable for 12V conversion from 6V system
  • Internal ballast resistor protects points
  • Replacement for original Auto-Lite coil
  • Ready to fit

★ Replica of the original Auto-Lite ignition coil, manufactured for modern 12 volt conversions of WWII Dodge military vehicles.

Application

For use in Dodge WC series vehicles where the electrical system has been converted from the original 6 volt to 12 volt. Originally, nearly all WWII Dodge WC ½ ton (1941-1942), ¾ ton (1942-1945) and 1½ ton 6x6 (1943-1945) had a 6 volt system. Exception: some late WC51/WC52 (from late 1944 onwards) and Command Cars with radio installation (WC8, WC16, WC25) had 12 volt from the factory.

Installation notes

Note: when converting to 12 volt, all bulbs, the regulator and possibly the fuel gauge must also be adapted. This coil has an internal ballast resistor — do NOT use an external resistor. Primary connection (+) to ignition switch, secondary connection to distributor. Check polarity: 12V system is negative earth.

Compatibility

ONLY for vehicles converted to 12 volt. Does NOT fit original 6 volt systems — use the 6 volt ignition coil instead. Coil can be used with original Auto-Lite distributor (IGC-4703 or IGC-4801), only the condenser must also be replaced with 12V type. Also compatible with electronic ignition systems such as Pertronix.

Historical context

Most WWII Dodge vehicles left the factory with 6 volt electrical systems. After the war, many vehicles were converted to 12 volt by various armies to standardise for radio equipment and improved starting performance. These conversions were carried out using both WWII 12V components and later civilian parts.
