★ Essential maintenance kit for reconditioning WWII Dodge WC starter motors. Carbon brushes are critical wear items that must be replaced over time for optimal performance.
Application
This repair kit is designed for 6 volt starter motors as fitted to Dodge WC series military vehicles from WWII (1941-1945), including WC 1/2 Ton, WC 3/4 Ton (WC-51, WC-52, WC-56, WC-57) and WC 1-1/2 Ton 6x6 variants. Suitable for Autolite (such as MAW-3132, MZ-4113 family) and Prestolite (MAW-4032) starter motors with 6 volt systems.
Installation notes
Before replacing the brushes, first check the condition of the commutator — it must be clean and smooth, without deep grooves. Brushes should be replaced when less than 2mm of travel remains towards the commutator. Completely dismantle the starter motor, thoroughly clean all components and inspect for wear. When fitting, ensure correct positioning of insulated and earthed brushes. Use a soldering iron of at least 100 watts if soldering is required.
Compatibility
This set is specific to 6 volt starter motors of the Dodge WC series. NOT suitable for 12 volt systems or later M37 vehicles without verification. Different WC models used different starter motor specifications — check your starter motor identification before ordering. Early and late WC production may have different brush dimensions.
Historical context
During WWII, Dodge WC series vehicles were equipped with robust 6 volt electrical systems. The starter motors, primarily from Autolite and Prestolite, were designed for reliability under harsh conditions. Regular maintenance of carbon brushes was standard army procedure at the time to ensure operational availability.
