★ An indispensable component for any restoration project. The starting crank handle was supplied as standard equipment and enabled manual engine starting when the electric starter motor failed in the field.
Application
Suitable for Dodge WC 3/4 ton 4x4 models without front winch (such as WC-51, WC-53, WC-54, WC-56). Not suitable for winch versions (such as WC-52, WC-57) which require a longer handle (33 inch, CC 598306) due to the 10 inch longer front bumper.
Installation notes
The T-shaped end is inserted into the crankshaft opening at the front of the engine. The two lugs engage in slots in the crankshaft. When the engine starts, the handle is automatically ejected by the bevelled shape of the coupling. Always use the correct technique: thumb ON THE SAME SIDE as the fingers (do not wrap around) and pull upwards — never push. This prevents serious injury from kickback.
Compatibility
This is the short handle (24 inch total) for non-winch models. Vehicles WITH winch (WC-52, WC-57, WC-58, WC-63) have a 10 inch longer front bumper and require the longer 33 inch handle (CC 598306). The two are NOT interchangeable — the short handle cannot reach the crankshaft on winch models.
Historical context
From 1942 onwards, a starting crank handle was supplied as standard with all Dodge 3/4 ton WC vehicles as part of the tool set. In rough terrain or at extreme temperatures, the handle could make the difference between completing a mission or being stranded.
