Application
According to the product category, this ammeter is suitable for: Willys MB and Ford GPW (1941-1945), CJ-2A (1946-1949), CJ-3A (1949-1953), CJ-3B (1953-1964), M38 (1950-1952, 12V) and M38A1 (1952-1966, 12V). Also applicable to GMC CCKW and Dodge WC-series 6x6 trucks that used a comparable 50-ampere gauge.
Installation notes
The ammeter is wired in series in the charging circuit. The battery cable from the starter switch goes to one pole of the gauge; generator/alternator, ignition switch and light switch connect to the other pole (starter cables do NOT run through the ammeter). With correct installation, the needle shows +25 to +50 ampere immediately after starting (charging), returns to zero when battery is full, and points left (-) when discharging (lights on, engine off). Use minimum 8-10 AWG wiring.
Compatibility
NOTE: Early WWII Willys MB/GPW (up to S.N. ~240,000, June 1943) used a -30/+30 ampere gauge with the GEG-5001 generator with oil cups. Later vehicles with GEG-5002 generator (sealed bearings) received the -50/+50 ampere version. During 12V conversions, the ammeter remains usable provided the voltage regulator system has an internal shunt (as on M38/M38A1). With solid-state regulators without shunt: convert to voltmeter.
Historical context
The ammeter was standard dashboard instrumentation on all WWII jeeps and light military vehicles to monitor the condition of the 6V electrical system. Later military jeeps (M38-series) received 12V with 60-ampere gauges, whilst civilian CJ models continued to operate with 50-ampere versions well into the 1960s.
