Fuel Tank Filler Cap Early Type

For small filler neck (2 inch)

Fuel tank filler cap for early WWII military jeeps with small filler neck. This early type was used from November 1941 to September 1942 on the first production series and featured a narrow opening of approximately 2 inch diameter, significantly smaller than the later 4 inch 'large cap' version introduced in September 1942.

Type

Early ('small cap', 2" diameter)

Period

November 1941 - September 1942

Finish

Metal, Olive Drab

Application

Early military jeeps with small filler neck

Features

  • Suitable for early fuel tanks with small filler neck
  • Small opening approx. 2" diameter (early type)
  • Metal construction with OD finish
  • With chain for attachment to vehicle
  • Original specification for early production

★ Authentic early type fuel tank filler cap as used on the first production series. This smaller cap was replaced in September 1942 by the larger 4" model to enable faster refuelling from jerrycans in combat conditions.

Application

This early type filler cap fits fuel tanks with small filler neck as used on early military jeeps produced from November 1941 to September 1942 (serial numbers approximately 100001 to 174738). Note: this is NOT compatible with the later 'large cap' tanks introduced from September 1942.

Installation notes

Check the diameter of the filler neck on your fuel tank. Early tanks have an opening of approximately 2" diameter, later tanks 4" diameter. The caps are NOT interchangeable between these two types. The opening in the driver's seat also differs: early has a small round opening, late has a larger opening.

Compatibility

ONLY suitable for early tanks with small filler neck (2" diameter). NOT compatible with later 'large cap' tanks (4" diameter) used from September 1942. Note: many vehicles were converted to the later large cap system during their military service or afterwards — therefore always check the actual opening on your tank first.

Historical context

The early small filler cap proved too slow in practice when refuelling from jerrycans during combat operations. In September 1942, a switch was therefore made to a larger 4" opening with funnel filter, which also enabled standardisation with Dodge and GMC tanks.
